Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chris Simms ruptures spleen
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms is recovering following emergency surgery to remove his spleen.
Chris Simms, 26, took several hard blows during Sunday's 26-24 home loss to Carolina and he had to be replaced late in the game by back-up Bruce Gradkowski.
Chris Simms was rushed to nearby St Joseph's Hospital where a ruptured spleen was diagnosed, and he was operated on.
"Chris is going to be just fine - his football career is not in jeopardy," said Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden on Monday.
There is a chance he can come back and play this year."
Sixth-round draft pick Bruce Gradkowski will begin the Buccaneers' next game at New Orleans on 8 October.
Chris Simms completed 13-of-24 passes for 139 yards and one touchdown with an interception before he had to leave Sunday's game and he also scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, giving the Buccaneers a 21-20 lead.
