Rock star Tom Petty plays to his biggest crowd at Super Bowl
Rock star singer-songwriter and guitarist, Tom Petty, performed during the interval at the Super Bowl and followed in the footsteps of a series of big names who have also had this honour, including the Rolling Stones and Sir Paul McCartney.
The Super Bowl was seen by an average audience of 97.5m, making it the second most-watched show in American TV history, according to official figures, and the exciting climax to the game, in which the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, is thought to have added to the broadcast's average audience.
The Super Bowl was broadcast in 223 countries and territories, as well as going out in 30 languages so this was potentially the biggest audience Tom Petty has ever had but humbly commenting on his performance, Tom Petty remained focused on his music and is reported to have said: "A lot is just trying to remember the next chord."
Tom Petty and his band The Heartbreakers played four songs: American Girl, I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin' and Running Down a Dream.
