Ravens star Ray Lewis out for the NFL season
Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis will have an operation on his torn hamstring and miss the rest of the NFL season.
Ray Lewis had missed six games since being injured against Chicago on
23 October. Ravens coach Bill Billick said Ray Lewis had been close to
returning to action.
"He could probably have played but from the long-term perspective, they decided to go with the surgery," he said.
Ray Lewis helped the Ravens to a crushing 34-7 win over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
Ray Lewis has been the heart of a dominating Baltimore defence for a decade.
With Ray Lewis on the sidelines for the last six weeks, the team has surrendered 23.5 points and 302 yards per game.
Ray Lewis will go on injured reserve for just only the second time in his career.
Ray Lewis missed 11 games in 2002 after severely injuring his shoulder in the fourth game of the season.
