Priest Holmes announces retirement from NFL

priest American footballer Priest Holmes, who plays as a running back, has had to announce his retirement from the NFL because of injuries to his neck that have failed to heal.

Kansas City Chiefs star player Priest Holmes, 34, made a return to sport last month after a two-year absence because of his problems, but after his neck started causing trouble again in Sunday's 13-10 defeat by Indianapolis, he sought the advice of doctors and decided to quit the sport.

Priest Holmes had an impressive career history and had scored an NFL record 27 rushing touchdowns in 2003, but he sustained head and neck injuries in 2005 when San Diego's Shawne Merriman tackled him.

Doctors warned that the damage could become permanent if the symptoms of neck pain came back.

Priest Holmes made his announcement that he was retiring on the eve of Thanksgiving and he said: "We have a lot to be thankful for. This will be a day of thanks for family. There's so much more life I have to experience."
