Pittsburgh Steelers sign Mike Tomlin as new head football coach
Pittsburgh Steelers have signed up Mike Tomlin, who was defensive co-ordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, to be their new head coach and he will be the first black head coach in the Pittsburgh Steelers' 74-year history.
Mike Tomlin accepted the job Sunday night and the hiring was announced Monday and he has signed a four-year contract, reportedly worth $2.5m (£1.27m) a year, with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers hired Mike Tomlin on the same day two more black coaches - Chicago's Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy of Indianapolis - made the Super Bowl for the first time.
Mike Tomlin is the Pittsburgh Steelers' third coach in 38 years, following in the footsteps of Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher, the coach who guided the Steelers to a Super Bowl win in 2006.
Mike Tomlin, describing his work said: "But I am what I am as coach - I don't call myself a 34-year-old coach or an experienced coach, I'm a football coach."
