Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger says he nearly died
Pittsburgh's Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has said that he knows he nearly died after a motorcycle crash last month.
Ben Roethlisberger, 24, required urgent surgery on multiple facial fractures, a broken nose and broken upper and lower jawbones.
"(Rescuers) told me that I was seconds, maybe a minute away from dying," Ben Roethlisberger told US sports broadcaster ESPN.
"I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach."
Ben Roethlisberger added: "Luckily, a paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach."
Ben Roethlisberger still has two-inch titanium plates holding together bones in his face and he lost two teeth and chipped several others as well as suffering concussion.
All Ben Roethlisberger's injuries could have been reduced if he had been wearing a safety helmet at the time.
"I literally forgot it," Ben Roethlisberger said.
"People have been making a big deal for the last couple years about me riding, and then me riding without a helmet, but I ride with a helmet also.
"If you don't wear a seat belt every time you ride in the car should I label you as a person who doesn't wear a seat belt?" Ben Roethlisberger asked.
