NFL defend Super Bowl XL officiating
The NFL has come to the defence of the officiating in Super Bowl XL
after it has been said that several bad calls had affected the game's
final result.
Most of the calls that are in question in Detroit went against Seattle
Seahawks, who lost 21-10 to Pittsburgh Steelers in the end.
Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said: "We knew it was going to be
tough. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the
striped shirts as well."
However, the NFL replied in a statement saying that it believed the game had been "properly officiated".
And NFL spokesman Greg Aiello added: "As in most NFL games, some tight
plays produced disagreement about the calls made by the officials."
Mike Holmgren, an ex-chairman of the NFL's rule-making committee, said
right after Sunday's game that a first-quarter offensive interference
call on Darrell Jackson, which prevented a Seattle Seahawks touchdown,
was a "no call".
It was one of several decisions that were debated fiercely and which
prevented Seattle Seahawks driving home their superiority early on in
the game.
The officiating crew for the event was headed by referee Bill Leavy,
and made up of officials graded as the best at each position during the
regular season.
