NFL appoint Roger Goodell as new commissioner
The National Football League (NFL) has appointed Roger Goodell as only its fourth commissioner since World War II.
The league's 32 owners elected Roger Goodell unanimously after ballots reduced the five-man shortlist to Goodell, 47, and lawyer Gregg Levy.
Roger Goodell had served as deputy to Paul Tagliabue, who he'll be replacing and has been given a five-year contract.
"The process has been very good for the National Football League," Roger Goodell said.
"The league's got a great foundation on which to build, but I think we've got a lot of challenges to face," Roger Goodell added.
Observers say Roger Goodell must try to raise the sport's profile abroad, as well as developing the league's cable channel and take advantage of new technologies such as wireless and video-on-demand.
Roger Goodell has worked for most of his career with the NFL, starting as an intern in the league office in 1982, and he became appointed as chief operating officer in 2001.
