NFL add amphetamines to banned drugs list The NFL has added amphetamine stimulants to the list of banned substances covered in its drug abuse policy.
Amphetamines had been covered under the NFL's less severe substance abuse policy, but from 2007 the drugs will have the same status as steroids.
From 2007 on, a first positive for amphetamines will bring a four-game suspension, and a second positive will result in an eight-game suspension.
A third positive test for amphetamines means a one-year ban from the league.
Under the substance-abuse policy, a player would not have been suspended until a third positive test.
NFL Players Association spokesman Greg Aiello explained: "The 2006 season will serve as a transitional year.
"The first positive test will subject a player to (more frequent) reasonable cause testing."
Greg Aiello added that 10,000 random tests a year are done under the league's steroid policy against performance-enhancing drugs.
