Disgraced American football star Michael Vick jailed
Disgraced American football star Michael Vick has been given a 23-month jail sentence for being part of a dog-fighting ring.
Michael Vick, 27, pleaded guilty with three others in August to having run Bad Newz Kennels, from 2001 to April 2007.
Michael Vick volunteered to begin his term of imprisonment in Virginia three weeks ago.
The NFL had banned Michael Vick indefinitely without pay and he has also lost important endorsement deals with companies including Nike.
Michael Vick, who could have received as much as five years in jail, apologised to for his actions.
Michael Vick admitted that he had shown "poor judgment" and he confessed to knowing that dogs that did not fight well were killed.
In his guilty plea, Michael Vick admitted that he had taken part in some way in the killing of at least eight dogs.
The prosecution claimed that dogs sometimes fought to the death and those that were regarded as no use as fighters were shot, drowned, hanged, electrocuted or killed by being slammed to the ground.
When the news about Michael Vick's involvement in dog-fighting originally broke he became at the centre of an international protest by animal rights groups.
