Detroit Lions fire coach Steve Mariucci
The Detroit Lions have fired coach Steve Mariucci on Monday after a string of poor performances.
The move had been widely expected since Detroit's 27-7 loss to the
Atlanta Falcons last Thursday - their seventh defeat in 11 games this
season.
Steve Mariucci, whose overall record with the Lions was 15-28, has more
than two years remaining on the £14.5m contract he signed in 2003.
Steve Mariucci came from San Francisco, where he went 57-39 over six seasons.
Defensive coordinator Dick Jauron has been named as interim coach.
"It's not a happy day. Steve is as good a person as I've been around,"
Lions president and chief executive Matt Millen said after firing his
third coach in five years.
"We started the season with high expectations. We've not lived up to
expectations. I believe this is a roster that is capable of making a
play-off run. I still believe that."
